Dressing for the Occasion

“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline.  Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense.  Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you.  And regardless of what else you put on, wear love.  It’s your basic, all-purpose garment.  Never be without it.”

Col. 3: 12-14 MSG

Unless you are a toddler, each of us pick out what we will wear each day.  For a formal affair, we’ll choose something dressy; for a day of hiking, we’ll wear something cool, casual and easy to move in.  We dress for the occasion.

It’s the same with our daily spiritual life.  For each situation that we are faced with, we will choose the “garment” that best fits the situation.  We might need to put on compassion one day and self-discipline the next.  Maybe when put in a spot where pride could rise up, we have to choose humility.  And quite often, when dealing with others, we’ll need to totally put on love!

How do we know what outfit to choose?  And how can we make sure that we do actually act as we should?

Well, we won’t get it right every time, but the truth is, only God can help us to treat others as we should.  It’s the Holy Ghost in us that helps us to be like Jesus.

As much as is possible, start each day off with prayer.  Ask God to lead and guide you, help you to please Him and be a blessing to others.  If we stay close to Him and stay in His Word, He will help us to become more and more like Him.

Remember…nobody’s perfect.  Sometimes we “get it right” when dealing with others, and sometimes we don’t.  Just repent, pick yourself up and try harder next time.  Don’t forget, God is a God of second chances.
